Cookie Consent & Disclosure Banner for Analytics-enabled Apps

Link to presentation poster

In 2020, the EU adopted the GDPR standard, to better protect users from applications monitoring personal data. For any online U-M application using tracking cookies, such as with Google Analytics tagging, the office of VP Comms has set up an integration with OneTrust to create a standardized cookie disclosure & consent banner. Multiple available libraries & plugins can embed this banner into apps built with Javascript, PHP, Wordpress, and React (JS or TS).

Teaching and Learning has recently implemented the banner into multiple student and faculty-facing tools, as it is a crucial step for setting up activity tracking with Google Analytics. This topic is meant to bring awareness of this available integration and give a technical insight into any implementation steps that other U-M teams may encounter with it.
