Data Governance Council

The Data Governance Advisory Committee began meeting in April 2022. The committee’s responsibilities involve recommending business practices for data governance that span data steward areas and ensuring these align with university strategic objectives.

The group is currently focusing on enterprise data, which is a critically important asset to the university, since time and resources are needed to safely manage and share the data through careful and effective data modeling, storage, and access provisioning.

Data Governance Committee

The DGAC initially responded to the Data Governance Committee’s report, which provided recommendations for future actions for data governance success, along with a status of the projects initiated under the Committee’s guidance.

Active Working Groups

  • Sex and Gender Data — Tasked with making recommendations for the collection of these data across U-M.
    • Seeing as these data span multiple data stewardship areas, there is a lack of consistency in the way sex and gender data are being collected currently. In the spirit of inclusivity, various constituencies around the university have expressed interest in collecting more representative data for both students and employees.
  • Personal Identifiable Information — Tasked with refining practices for managing PII.
    • The working group proposed two focused subcommittees to guide the secure sharing of sensitive student and HR data, emphasizing the identification of key PII and streamlining of procedures. Initiatives include updating user training, clarifying data access, and evaluating roles for enhanced security.

Recommendations

Once available, recommendations will be posted on the Data Stewardship Resources webpage.
