Using Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides and Hololens2 to Develop Practice-Ready Nurses

Abstract


The University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) Clinical Learning Center (CLC) provides an environment for experiential learning for nursing students using various healthcare simulation technologies (e.g. high-fidelity manikins, standardized patients, task trainers). The school is experiencing significant organic growth in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Based on this growth, the CLC is considering simulation alternatives using advanced technology and software. Our challenge was to develop and cultivate the tactile skill development needed in nursing while considering our new learning environment that necessitated social distancing.

Microsoft Dynamic 365 Guides and Hololens2 are excellent platforms for designing augmented reality training tools for teaching procedural skills. We used Microsoft Dynamic 365 Guides to design procedural training (e.g. lumbar puncture) in conjunction with task trainers to create a mixed reality learning experience. The purpose of our study was to evaluate usability, acceptability, engagement, and effectiveness of the Microsoft HoloLens2 in learning clinical procedures using an augmented reality learning platform for procedural training.

Overall, students reported high ratings of usability, acceptability, and engagement with the Hololens2 device. Students reported a mean score of 76.18 (range = 0–100) (N = 25) on the System Usability Scale. Patients’ mean scores on the questions of the Acceptability scale ranged from 4.46 to 4.67 (range = 0-5) (n=25). Mean scores on questions pertaining to engagement ranged from 7.75 to 8.79 (range = 0-10) (n = 25). All students passed their competency testing after use of the Hololens2 device for procedural training.
