How U-M Networks Enable the Future of Learning, Research, & Care

2022 Michigan IT Symposium - Helping to shape the future of learning, research & care - November 16 & 17, 2022

The campus network addresses the need for robust and expeditious online connectivity for teaching, research, and clinical needs. A fast internet connection is essential for efficient, easy access to the learning management systems, for sharing research work and results, and for seeking and receiving medical advice. With this presentation, we will discuss the successful upgrade of the campus WiFi network, the status of the current deployment of transformational changes to the university's core data network, plans for network upgrades in every building, and further network security enhancements:

  • The Campus WiFi Upgrade project replaced the campus WiFi infrastructure, deploying more than 16,000 WiFi devices, in over 225 buildings.
  • ITS is deploying a completely re-architected core network infrastructure, a technical base for teaching, learning, and research, that will increase network speeds by as much as 100 times, ensuring higher capacity and reliability.
  • ITS is replacing and upgrading the distribution layer network switches in every building, enabling 100 Gbps network connectivity to every building.
  • ITS is upgrading and enhancing our network security infrastructure.
