I am the informal advocate in our team for integrating digital accessibility, learning disabilities support, and UDL use in instruction as well as everyday non-instructional projects. My journey began several years ago when I started working with the ID2ID mentoring program; last year, the outcome was an accessible video best practices presentation. My mentees and I put it together as our final product.
I did several presentations to the Dean's Office at Michigan Medicine and a presentation for Nurse Educator forum. For our team, I am creating a calendar for one staff meeting each month on best practices or tools/resources for these topics. I will have a ten (10) minutes best practices and/or tool highlight for digital accessibility, DIY digital ergonomics, and inclusivity practices. Examples: name pronunciation tools, not making assumptions about dyslexia or learning disability.
I also tie in digital accessibility and UDL to ensure that we learn from older users-thus asking to think about ageism, learning, and technology.
Because I personally experienced a lot of bias and prejudice based on my background and how I learn, I want to share with others what’s available to make experiences better for everyone.
