Network performance monitoring with perfSONAR at the University of Michigan

Presented by: Ed Colone & Katarina Thomas | ITS

Abstract

perfSONAR is a distributed, worldwide deployed, network measurement toolkit. Thousands of perfSONAR instances have been deployed globally, and many are available for open network performance testing.

The heart of the system is its measurement scheduling module, a.k.a. pScheduler. perfSONAR provides a uniform interface to the scheduling module, capabilities to store and retrieve data, and generate data visualizations. However, the system can be modified to support new metrics, and augmented to integrate with up-to-date, powerful storage, analysis, and data visualization solutions.

For the last four years, U-M Networks software developers and interns in the U-M ITS internship program have teamed up to create plugins for the perfSONAR and enhance its existing capabilities. This poster will provide a high level overview of perfSONAR and its scheduler module (pScheduler), perfSONAR tests and tools, present developed plugins, and give information about how to create your own plugins. It will also detail how our initiatives with mobile perfSONAR testpoints benefit campus by providing network performance metrics to help diagnose service degradations.
