Creating Transparency with ViziBLUE

Presented by: Svetla Sytch | ITS

Abstract

In today’s world of ubiquitous technology, students are aware of and interested in their data privacy, and want to know who has access to certain personal data or why the data is collected in the first place. It is not always easy to get these answers from the multitudes of service providers they depend on for almost all aspects of their lives. Here at U-M, we believe in respect of privacy, transparency of data practices, and helping our students understand the digital ecosystem in which they live and learn.

The ViziBLUE guide to personal data, developed with input and help from students across U-M, provides information on what student data is collected at the University of Michigan, and how it is used and shared. The tool has been a valuable resource for answering student questions and is directly supporting the university’s reputation as a leader in the responsible and ethical handling of personal information.

By spotlighting ViziBLUE at the Michigan IT Symposium, we would like to encourage the Michigan IT community to not only promote the tool, but continue to explore creative ways for engaging students in addressing important issues, such as privacy, at the university and beyond.
