Dear faculty, staff and students,

I am excited to share that effective August 11, Slack at U-M will be available to all faculty, staff and students on all campuses and in Michigan Medicine. Slack is a dynamic collaboration tool that enhances workgroup communications by providing a searchable platform for individuals and groups to chat in real-time, share content, and keep conversations organized and accessible.

The service is simple to use and has an intuitive user interface. The groups are easy to set up and manage which allows for better collaboration and engagement across units; dedicated channels allow opportunities for individualized topics, projects or teams; and the Slack Connect feature presents a way for faculty, staff and students to readily interact with those outside their workspace. The service is not permitted for use with HIPAA data, and individuals should refer to the Sensitive Data Guide for appropriate use information.

Our teams are working to develop documentation and other materials for the Slack website, which will be launched next week. On the site will be details about features and benefits, and information on how to create an account, request a workspace, become more adept at using the tool, and frequently asked questions.

As we move toward the start of the academic year, we are preparing for the return of faculty, staff, and students to campus and the wonderful excitement it will bring. We want to be there to assist in any way we can.

Please reach out to me at [email protected] if you have any questions or if I can assist in any way. You can also reach out to our outstanding ITS Service Center for further assistance. Have a wonderful day.

Best regards,

Ravi
