Project Complete: Creating More Options for U-M Accounts
Guest accounts can be a burden for prospective students, parents, donors, and researchers from other institutions. When the Social Login project began in January 2017, U-M had more than 1 million “Friend” accounts that relied on soon-to-be outdated technology.
- Social Login at U-M allows people to use a social account they already have (such as Facebook, LinkedIn, or others) to log in to a service at U-M instead of using a uniqname and UMICH password or a Friend account. Two university units have begun using social login for specific services:
- The Alumni Association allows alumni to associate social accounts with their U-M identity to register for events, purchase Michigan Athletics tickets, and more.
- University Libraries provides social login as an option for guest login to the HathiTrust Digital Library resources (see HathiTrust login page).
If you are interested in using Social Login for accounts that use university resources, see Implementing Social Login for U-M Services.
The project completed in January 2018. See News and Updates for details on this project’s accomplishments. If you’re interested in learning more about this project, please contact the EIAM program team.
